Canyon’s Visual Arts program is a working studio where students build technical skill, test ideas, and develop an artistic voice of their own. Beginning and advanced artists learn by making, reflecting, revising, and sharing work that matters to them.
An education in seeing and creating
Students work across traditional and contemporary media, from graphite, acrylic, watercolor, ink, and sculpture to mixed media and digital art. The program supports growth from foundational drawing and painting through AP Art & Design.
Develop ideas
Experiment, take creative risks, discuss artwork, and turn personal questions into purposeful visual work.
Share a voice
Prepare portfolios and present work through school, district, juried, and community exhibitions.

Meet the instructor
Kathy Flanagan-Rose
Visual Arts Instructor
Mrs. Flanagan-Rose leads a studio culture that balances disciplined skill-building with experimentation, reflection, and individual expression. Students are challenged to move beyond a first idea, respond to feedback, and build work with intention.
Her own training in printmaking informs a program grounded in process: artists learn that strong work grows through curiosity, practice, revision, and persistence.

Exhibitions and recognition
Canyon artists participate in district showcases, juried exhibitions, and community events, including opportunities connected with the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach and Laguna College of Art + Design. These experiences ask students to prepare work for an audience and see themselves as contributing artists.
College and creative pathways
Portfolio reviews and conversations with art-school representatives help students understand the range of futures available in art and design. Canyon has connected students with institutions including ArtCenter College of Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, Otis College of Art and Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Laguna College of Art + Design.
