Visual Arts

The Visual Arts program at Canyon High School empowers students to explore their creativity, develop technical skills, and express their unique voices through a wide range of media. From foundational courses in drawing and painting to advanced study in AP Art & Design, our curriculum supports artistic growth at every level.

Students work with both traditional and contemporary materials, including graphite, acrylic, watercolor, ink, mixed media, sculpture, and digital art. Our classrooms serve as active studios, where students learn through hands-on experiences, guided experimentation, and critical discussions. We emphasize not only technical skill but also personal voice, creative risk-taking, and conceptual development.

Canyon artists participate in numerous art shows and competitions throughout the year, including the Orange County District Art Showcase, Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach, Laguna College of Art & Design High School Student Juried show, district exhibitions, and community events.  Our students have earned awards for excellence in painting, drawing, digital media,  and many have gone on to pursue art in college and beyond.

Each year, several prestigious art schools, Art Center College of Art & Design, Maryland College of Art & Design (MICA), Otis College of Art & Design, Savannah College of Art & Design, and Laguna College of Art & Design visit Canyon to meet with students, review portfolios, and recruit emerging talent. These visits provide students with feedback and opportunities to explore future pathways in the visual arts.

Students who are passionate about visual storytelling, self-expression, and the creative process will find Canyon’s Visual Arts program to be a supportive and challenging environment where they can thrive.
