Publication (Yearbook & Journalism)

Student Media at Canyon High School

Publications

One program. Four platforms. Canyon students report, write, photograph, design, verify and publish the stories of our school community across yearbook, digital news, magazine and social media.

The program

One newsroom, four ways to publish

Students may enroll through Journalism or Annual/Yearbook, but the work is connected. Staff members contribute across platforms, share reporting, develop visual and written storytelling skills, and learn that publication requires both creativity and responsibility.

Annual publication

The Legend Yearbook

A student-created record of the school year built through reporting, photography, interviews, design and deadline-driven production.

Digital journalism

CHS News

Our student news site publishes campus reporting, features, sports, opinion, arts and culture throughout the school year.

Print + feature storytelling

VOICES Magazine

A magazine platform for longer-form stories, profiles, photography, design and student-centered features that benefit from a more visual print experience.

Audience + distribution

Social Media

Students adapt verified reporting and visual storytelling for timely social content, helping important Canyon stories reach students where they already are.

How we work

Report once. Build for the right platform.

The goal is not four separate groups competing for stories. It is one publications staff making intentional decisions about where a story belongs and how it should be told.

01 · Report

Find the story

Notice what is happening, identify the people affected, interview sources, gather evidence and photograph the moment.

02 · Verify

Get it right

Check names, facts, quotes, captions and context before publication. Accuracy comes before speed.

03 · Publish

Choose the best form

A story may become a yearbook spread, web article, magazine feature, social post, or a combination of formats.

Students do real work for a real audience

Publications is open to students from all grade levels. Students build practical experience in reporting, interviewing, writing, photography, design, editing, audience awareness, collaboration and deadline management.

The program is student-driven, but it is not a free period. Staff members are expected to contribute, communicate professionally, accept editing and critique, meet deadlines, and take responsibility for the accuracy and quality of published work.
